…”How did you do it?” It was to this implied question that Jesus set forth the steps to miracles:
…Step Three : Be specific. Jesus spoke to the winds and the sea only three words - “Peace, be still.” To the fig tree he forbade any further fruitfulness. To the mountain, the command was clear, “Be removed and cast into the sea!” To a demon he said, “Be quiet and come out of him;” to a dead girl he said, “Little girl arise;” and to his friend Lazarus, in the grave and decomposing, his command was simply, “Lazarus, come forth!”
Jesus said, “My Father is working, and I am working.” He saw what the Father was doing and he heard what the Father was saying, then he did what the Father was doing and he said what the Father was saying. Never, ever did he nullify his faith commands by that faith killer which contemporary Christians think makes them sound spiritual; “If it be thy will.”
Imagine a boat sinking in a violent storm and a command o faith, “Peace, be still...if it is God’s will.” Imagine saying to a little dead girl, “Arise, if it is God’s will.” If it isn’t God’s will, then don’t command it. And if it is God’s will, don’t negate the powerful word by a phrase reflecting doubt.
Step Four: Do not doubt in your heart. King David wrote in the Psalms, “My heart is fixed oh God on thee.” James, the brother of the Lord, wrote, “but when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord: he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does” (James 1:6-8, NIV.).
Here is the principle. If two agree on earth, it will be done for them. In the realm of miracles, the agreement is between the Spirit of God and your human spirit. The inspiration comes from the Holy Spirit of God who is showing His will that a miracle will come forth. It is God who wanted to heal Marlene Klepees. It is God who wanted to bring CBN into being. It is God who wanted to rescue our fledgling ministry from the power of a killer hurricane. It was God who wanted to raise Lazarus from the dead.
It is always God prompting, leading, encouraging, challenging…setting before us goals that seem impossible. It is God who opens for us wonderful worlds of opportunity. It’s God who prompts us to extend his kingdom and shows us to care for the downtrodden and needy.
What God wants is for us to agree with Him on earth for the blessings He desires to give us. That means our spirits and our emotions must be in agreement with His Spirit. When that agreement takes place, our speech becomes His speech and we become surrogates for God on earth. Then, if we don’t doubt – if we don’t disagree with God – if we are not constantly allowing the rationalism of our minds to convince us that miracles are not possible – if we are not double-minded – then, according to Jesus, we will have the things that we say!
