The Greatest Hero

By Cathy Irvin
CBN Staff Writer

CBN.com - Once again the date we all remember fell upon us -- September 11th. It has been six years and yet, this date is still important to us. It probably will be etched in our hearts forever.

It was the day the Twin Towers fell because of a terrorist attack on our nation. We often think of the heroes in this situation -- those who gave their lives to rescue others from danger. All of us are saddened for those who lost their lives that day -- both those who went to work and those who fearlessly tried to save them.

Thank God there are rescuers like firemen and police officers who are so valiant in their cause, but how tragic this had to happen at all.

Can we forget the past? Can we simply ignore that this tragedy happened? God forgive us, if we think we can. I was thinking about a Scripture that read,

“Forget those things which lie behind and press toward the mark of the prize of the high calling in Christ Jesus."

This reminds me of people who say we need to move on and forget this ever happened. But this verse in the Bible is not talking about forgetting what happened to these dear souls. We should not just focus on the past, but press on in our Christian walk to obtain the promise. We need to know that we can press on in God and live in victory over every plan of the enemy -- any attack against our nation, any disaster we face.

The Lord wants you to remember that our protection is not in mankind or any system. We can and must only rely on God. We must pray for our leaders to have wisdom to fight against any threat to our land. But, we must ultimately put our trust in God for Him to protect us.

We live in the greatest nation in the world with some Godly leaders and of course, men and women who use their God-given intelligence to keep our home land as safe as they possibly can. But even when we let our guard down and something happens we understand that in the Bible we are told that there will be trials and tribulations. All those heroes can not save us from the real enemy who is not the terrorist, but Satan himself who as the “god of this world” is trying to destroy everyone. It is a battle for souls and the adversary uses people or groups of people to try and succeed. But, in the end he is the defeated foe.

Yes, there will always be heroes, and we will remember their sacrifice, but let us never forget the supreme sacrifice our Savior, our greatest Hero, whose name is Jesus did for humanity. By His dying on a cross He has made the way for us to have eternal life, whether we die by the hand of another or simply die in our sleep.

We are not to fear as we approach another year. We are to know that we serve the Ultimate hero for any threat or even disaster and that he will rescue us from the snare of the fowler.

Let us prepare our hearts to pray for God’s protection over our land and that we will all be ready in any impending danger to be rescued by Our Greatest Hero, Jesus Christ.

"My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield and the horn of my salvation.
He is my stronghold, my refuge and my Savior—
from violent men you save me." (2 Samuel 22:3, NIV)
