Jennifer E. Jones: You were on Premier Christian Cruises’ Girls Get-A-Way Cruise in November. I heard from co-owner Roy Morgan that someone got saved while listening to you sing. How does it feel to the Holy Spirit use you and your music to make that kind of impact?
Sandi Patty: Wow. It always is amazing to me when we just show up and do what God’s called us to do. [We] see what God has done even in spite of our imperfections.
Jones: He certainly is amazing. You have a Christmas album out called Yuletide Joy. What are some of your favorite Christmas memories?
Patty: Being with family and friends. The Christmas season can be quite hectic. With kids home from school and not having to work, it makes home a little less hectic. We can actually sit down and finish our commitments. After Christmas, things can be nice and relaxing.
Jones: How do you do it all? Blending families and making meals and buying gifts?
Patty: Online shopping.
Jones: Ah!
Patty: [laughs] Online shopping and gift cards.
Jones: When you were preparing for Yuletide Joy, how did you choose the songs? There are hundreds, if not thousands, of Christmas songs out there.
Patty: There are some wonderful songs. I love Christmas music so much. I had recorded a couple of other Christmas albums before. We took those songs out of the mix. We tried to come up with some songs I’d been using the last couple of years in my own Christmas concerts. We widdled it down that way. We put two or three songs together in a medley to fit more on the album.
Jones: We know that you have a new book out called A New Day. It’s about finding hope in all those situations where hope is so far away. This Christmas season we focus so much on joy when there are people who have lost loved ones. How can people find hope?
Patty: It’s interesting that, while this is a holiday full of great joy for so many people, it’s one of the saddest holidays. There are more suicides that occur during this holiday season than any other time of the year. It’s a very lonely time for a lot of people. The best thing that a person can do is reach outside themselves. There are so many organizations this time of year that need some help. Serve a meal. Play with some little kids in an orphanage. Call a church and say, “I’ve got this time on my hands. What can I do?” Just reaching outside of ourselves takes our loneliness and our hurt away. When we see that hope that you can bring someone else, it sparks that hope inside of us.
