WINNING AT THE BBQ PIT
Lee Ann started grilling for her family and friends in her backyard. While working in hotel catering in Georgia and Virginia for 15 years, she was competing in some of the toughest cookouts in the country.
In 2002, she started the Wood Chick's BBQ Catering and Competition Team. The catering was a success and soon she began working various fairs and festivals in Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia.
In 2005 Lee Ann opened Wood Chick's BBQ in Chesapeake, Virginia. She uses a BBQ pit that is fueled primarily by hickory and apple woods to slow smoke bone-in pork butts, pork ribs, beef brisket, chicken and turkey for up to 16 hours at a time. Her award-winning BBQ is seasoned with her BBQ dry rub and is in high demand, not only for the taste but because the BBQ is very lean.
The meat is quite healthy and a favorite among locals trying to watch their carbs. “We’ve gotten quite a lot of customers….. not all the carbs are gone, but you’ve cut out a whole lot,” says Lee Ann.
In 2009, Lee Ann was featured in TLC’s docu-series, BBQ Pitmasters. The series showed the high-stakes world of competitive barbeque. She won the 2009 Pulled Pork Throwdown defeating Food Network’s Bobby Flay.
Lee Ann is also a chef/partner in ChicagoWood Chick's BBQ, sister property.
