HOME RUN – THE MOVIE
On April 19, 2013, the movie Home Run opens in theaters across the country. It is a story about baseball all-star Cory Brand whose life is spiraling out of control off the field because he has trouble dealing with his past. Cory's agent sends him back to the small town where he grew up in an attempt to save his career and reputation after a DUI and a team suspension.
Back in his hometown, Cory is required to coach the local youth baseball team and spend eight weeks in the only recovery program in town. He can't wait to return to his old life as quickly as possible. While working with the young players, he rediscovers the joy of baseball. Cory also discovers his need to find freedom from his past, hope for his future, and win back the love he left behind. With this unexpected second chance, Cory finds himself on a powerful journey of transformation and redemption.
Home Run illustrates how the memories of our past, sometimes brought on by generations of mistakes, do not have to define our future. The film speaks to anyone dealing with issues of any kind, a hurt that won't heal, and the walls put up by the shame and isolation it brings. Home Run is a powerful reminder that with God it's never too late.
THE STORIES BEHIND THE MOVIE
In 2010, Carol’s production partner, Tom Newman, suggested that they make a film. Carol says “the first miracle” of the film was that she said “yes” because she had never worked on a feature film before. Then Tom asked Carol what film they should make. Carol prayed and felt like God was saying that He no longer wanted people in the prison of addiction. This inspired her to do a film about addiction recovery.
Celebrate Recovery, which is highlighted in the film, came to mind because it was a program in her church. It became a great inspiration and component for the film. Carol researched Celebrate Recovery closely. In order to truly understand and depict the “real” Celebrate Recovery, several members of the Home Run production team were participants in the program. It was important to Carol to keep the authenticity of the recovery process in the film so that all stories being portrayed in the film were actual Celebrate Recovery stories. This twelve-step addiction recovery program based on Christian principles was founded in 1991 by Pastor John Baker of Southern California's Saddleback Church. Today, the program can be found in churches all over the world.
Through the film, Carol hopes people will see that God wants to heal us and He provides real life change. No matter what burdens we may be carrying, we are not alone. There are others who have struggled with the same thing and have found a way through. Authentic relationships can help bring real healing. The target audience of the film is Christians. Carol says so many people in the church need to talk about healing and finding true freedom. She suggests church leaders buy blocks of tickets and make it a church activity.
