Saudi Arabia launched airstrikes against Shiite Houthi rebels in Yemen on Thursday.

"The objective is to defend the legitimate government of President [Abed Rabbo Mansour] Hadi from the takeover attempts by the Houthi militias in Yemen," Adel al-Jubeir, the Saudi ambassador to the United States, said.

Footage of the military offensive shows flashing lights and what sounds like machine gun fire.

A Saudi-owned news outlet reports that the kingdom has deployed 100 fighter jets and 150,000 soldiers as well as other naval units.
