Bergdahl Latest Blow to Obama Foreign Policy?

From Iran to Iraq to Israel, President Barack Obama's foreign policy in the Middle East is in chaos.

The latest example: Last year, the president gave up five members of the Taliban to get back Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. Now that soldier has been charged as a deserter.

In 2014, Bergdahl's return was treated by the White House as the return of a hero.

"We don't leave our men or women in uniform behind," the president declared after Bergdahl's release.

And National Security Advisor Susan Rice told ABC's "This Week," "The point is he is back. He is going to be safely reunited with his family. He served the United States with honor and distinction."

The president even invited Bergdahl's parents to the White House.

"He wasn't forgotten by his community in Idaho, or the military, which rallied to support the Bergdahls through thick and thin," Obama said.

But the White House spin began falling flat immediately, with both Republicans and Democrats quickly criticizing the president for trading the Taliban leaders for Berghdal.

Bergdahl had written letters his father saying, "The title of U.S. soldier is just the lie of fools" and that he was "ashamed to even be American."

Fellow soldiers went public with their disgust.

"He knew what he was doing when he deserted us," one soldier charged.

Now, after a thorough investigation, Bergdahl is being charged for desertion with the intent to avoid hazardous duty, endangering his fellow soldiers and misbehavior before the enemy.

"Endangering the safety on a command unit or place carries a maximum potential penalty confinement for life," Col. Daniel J.W. King, spokesman for U.S. Army Forces Command, said.

But the Bergdahl case is only the latest problem for the president when it comes to the Middle East and radical Islam.

The president has been roundly criticized for calling the Islamic "the JV team" when the jihadist army proved to be a deadly threat. The United States has just launched fresh airstrikes against ISIS.

In addition, just a few months ago, the president called Yemen as a success story in the war on terror. But now Yemen is in chaos. It's president has fled, and Saudi Arabia is attacking the rebels with air, land, and sea power.

Regarding Israel, Obama has been feuding with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and was even accused of working to prevent his re-election.  Consequently, now that he wants a nuclear deal with Iran, the president doesn't have a good deal of trust on Capitol Hill.

Meanwhile, a new survey shows the president could have a problem convincing the public as well.

An NBC-Wall Street Journal poll earlier this month found that 71 percent don't believe the talks with Iran will make a real difference in stopping it from building nuclear weapons.
