The U.S. military attacked the Islamic extremist group Al Shabab in Somalia on Monday.

A senior Somali intelligence official said a drone targeted terrorist leader Ahmed Abdi Godane.

It's not clear if Godane was killed in the strike, but a Somali official speaking anonymously said intelligence indicated Godane "might have been killed along with other militants."

Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby said U.S. officials are assessing the results and will provide an update when appropriate.

Al Shabab is mostly active in Somalia's rural regions, but it has carried out attacks in neighboring Kenya.
