Suspected cop killer Eric Frein is in police custody Friday following a long and expensive manhunt.

Federal marshals arrested Frein, 31, on Thursday night in the mountains of Pennsylvania.

Police said Frein, who is a skilled survivalist, was taken by surprise and without incident at an abandoned airport after weeks in the wild. He was shackled in the handcuffs of the state trooper he allegedly killed last month ABC News reports.

"He has been stripped of his guns, his bombs, and now his freedom," Sam Rabadi, chief of the Philadelphia office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said at a late-night news conference.

Frein is accused of killing state police Cpl. Bryon Dickson and wounding another trooper in a Sept. 12 ambush.

He eluded investigators for 48 days, hiding in the remote woods of the Poconos.

Entire towns had been put on lockdown during the manhunt.

Residents said they are relieved he has been found.

"It actually felt like I was in a warzone a couple of weeks ago, but it actually is a good thing that he is caught and we can finally rest again," resident Mark Denny said.

Prosecutors said they will seek the death penalty in the case.
