Tim Kaine: Denying Refugees Is against American Values

Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., has waded into the debate over Syrian refugees, calling for the United States to continue accepting asylum seekers from the war-torn country.

Kaine said that while the screening process to enter the United States needs to be as tough as possible, attempts to keep refugees out are misguided.

"The fact is that refugees are currently subject to the absolute highest level of security checks of any category of traveler coming to the U.S. – with special criteria in place for those coming from Syria on top of the normal procedures," Kaine said in a recent statement.

"Getting admitted as a refugee generally takes more than a year and a half and involves signoff from numerous agencies, including the National Counterterrorism Center, the CIA, the FBI, Homeland Security, the State Department, and the Department of Defense."

Kaine added that the notion that no Syrian can ever enter the United States as a refugee is "antithetical to our values."
